AquaSorb™ CS is a medium activity granular activated carbon, produced from a sustainable raw material. Its enhanced microporosity makes it particularly suitable for the removal of low molecular weight organic compounds and their chlorinated by-products, such as chloroform and other trihalomethanes (THMs). It is also ideally suited for the removal of oxidizing agents, such as chlorine and ozone, from process water. An important feature of this material is its high mechanical hardness and the extensive dedusting during production, ensuring an exceptionally clean activated carbon product.

Features and Benefits:

  • Highly microporous structure

  • Maximum mechanical hardness

  • Excellent adsorption capacity

  • High volume activity

  • Rapid dechlorination

  • Effective ozone removal

  • Low filtered water turbidity

Activated carbon from coconut shells is one of the most widely used and effective materials in water purification.

What is it?

  • Raw material: coconut shells, which are a very dense and hard natural material.
  • Activation process: shells are carbonized at high temperature and then chemically or steam-activated, creating a microporous and mesoporous structure.
  • As a result, a highly porous carbon with a huge surface area (up to 1000–1500 m²/g) is obtained.

Why is it used in water purification?

  • High porosity: coconut carbon has many micropores that are particularly effective at adsorbing organic compounds, pesticides, chlorine residues, and odor-causing substances.
  • Natural origin: produced from a renewable resource, making it more environmentally friendly than coal- or wood-based carbon.

Effective against:

  • Chlorine and chlorine compounds (eliminates chlorine taste and odor);
  • Organic substances (phenols, humic substances, pesticides, pharmaceutical residues);
  • Odors and color;
  • Partially heavy metals (adsorption occurs in combination with other methods).

Advantages of coconut shell carbon compared to other carbons

  • Denser structure → longer service life in the filter.
  • Higher proportion of micropores → better suited for drinking water purification (especially for removal of organics, chlorine, and odors).
  • Lower ash content and fewer impurities than wood-based carbon.
  • Environmentally friendly → produced from waste products (coconut shells), not fossil resources.

Applications in filtration

Household:

  • Drinking water filters (kitchen tap filters, reverse osmosis cartridges, refrigerator filters).
  • Main stage in multi-stage filtration (e.g., TrioPure, MonoPure, etc.).

Industrial:

  • Food industry, pharmaceuticals, beverage production, aquariums, swimming pools.

Limitations

  • Does not remove salts, nitrates, or hardness – it is not water softening or demineralization.
  • Gradually saturates – once pores are filled, the carbon loses efficiency and must be replaced.
  • May serve as a breeding ground for bacteria if the filter is not replaced or disinfected regularly.

Summary

Coconut shell activated carbon is ideal for drinking water filters, as it effectively removes odors, taste defects, organic contaminants, and chlorine residues. However, it is not a complete water treatment solution (it does not address hardness, iron, or manganese).
