AquaSorb® HS is an acid-washed, high-purity and high-activity granular activated carbon, manufactured by steam activation from carefully selected coconut shells. This activated carbon is designed for use in ultra-pure water treatment systems, where low conductivity and exceptionally high purity are required. It is also specifically developed for the removal of heavy hydrocarbons from recovered condensate. The acid-washing process removes soluble silica from the carbon matrix, preventing its release into the condensate.

What is it?

• Raw material: coconut shells, a very dense and hard natural material.
• Activation process: shells are carbonized at high temperature and then chemically or steam-activated, creating a microporous and mesoporous structure.
• Result: a highly porous carbon with an enormous surface area (up to 1000–1500 m²/g).

Why is it used in water treatment?

• High porosity: coconut shell carbon has a large number of micropores, which are particularly effective for adsorbing organic compounds, pesticides, chlorine residues, and odor-causing substances.
• Natural origin: produced from a renewable resource, more environmentally friendly than coal- or wood-based carbon.

Limitations

• Does not remove salts, nitrates, or hardness – it is not water softening or demineralization.
• Gradually saturates – once pores are filled, the carbon loses efficiency and must be replaced.
• May become a breeding ground for bacteria if the filter is not replaced or disinfected regularly.

Summary

Coconut shell activated carbon is ideal for drinking water filters, as it effectively eliminates odors, taste defects, organic contaminants, and chlorine residues. However, it is not a complete water treatment solution (it does not address hardness, iron, or manganese).
