Chlorine

Chlorine is a widely used disinfectant added to drinking water to destroy bacteria and viruses. It helps ensure the microbiological safety of water, especially in centralised urban water supply systems. However, excessive chlorine levels can affect the taste, smell and comfort of using the water.

Chlorinated drinking water is often recognisable by its strong smell and taste, and prolonged use can dry out the skin and hair. Chlorine can also react with organic substances in the water, forming by-products that are undesirable for daily consumption.

The presence of chlorine does not mean that the water is unsafe, but removing it significantly improves the properties of the water and the experience of using it for drinking and cooking.

Solution

The most commonly used solution for removing chlorine is activated carbon filtration, which binds chlorine and improves the taste and smell of the water. Under-sink ultrafiltration systems are also suitable for removing chlorine from drinking water.
