In Estonia, drinking water quality is regulated by the Minister of Social Affairs regulation “Quality and monitoring requirements for drinking water and methods of analysis, and requirements for the provision of information to consumers”. The requirements cover microbiological and chemical quality parameters, as well as indicators describing the general condition of the water.
The table below provides a short selection of the parameters most often considered for private homes and water treatment. The complete list, exceptions and monitoring requirements are set out in the regulation published in Riigi Teataja.
| Parameter | Limit value or requirement |
|---|---|
| Escherichia coli | 0 / 100 ml |
| Intestinal enterococci | 0 / 100 ml |
| Coliform bacteria | 0 / 100 ml |
| Nitrate | 50 mg/l |
| Nitrite | 0.50 mg/l |
| Ammonium | 0.5 mg/l |
| Iron | 200 µg/l, equivalent to 0.2 mg/l |
| Manganese | 50 µg/l, equivalent to 0.05 mg/l |
| Electrical conductivity | 2500 µS/cm at 20 °C |
| Chloride | 250 mg/l |
| Sodium | 200 mg/l |
| Sulphate | 250 mg/l |
| Oxidability | 5.0 mg/l O₂ |
| pH | 6.5–9.5 |
| Turbidity, taste, smell and colour | Acceptable to consumers, with no abnormal changes |
What does a water analysis result mean?
The limit value for a single parameter does not always describe the overall safety of the water or identify the appropriate water treatment solution. Results must be assessed together with the water source, sampling method, other parameters and the intended use of the water.
WATEX chemical water analysis helps you choose a water filter, but does not replace a complete drinking water compliance analysis by an accredited laboratory. WATEX does not perform microbiological analyses.
