Individual households often use decentralized water supply systems using local water treatment plants. The source of water supply for these houses is underground water, which is taken from wells, spikes or deep wells.

The source of water for wells and taps is groundwater. They form the first permanent underground aquifer where water pressure equals atmospheric pressure. Mostly associated with Quaternary sediments, more accessible and more at risk of contamination. It is important to build spikes and wells far away from production companies and other environmental polluters who can contaminate groundwater due to infiltration of rainwater during rainfall. These waters are often contaminated with nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, organic pollutants, as well as hydrogen sulfide, which gives the water an unpleasant smell of rotten eggs.

The water source of the borehole is artesian waters. Most often, a borehole is installed to obtain drinking water from the middle layers of the earth, or dolomite, where the water is cleaner. Water obtained from a deep well is of better quality compared to water obtained from groundwater. Deep wells can be installed in practically any place, after evaluating the hydrogeological and geological condition of the surrounding environment, so the depth of the deep well will be different in different parts of Latvia.

The formation of the overall chemical composition of groundwater is determined by terrain, climate, rock characteristics and soil cover. As a rule, there is an increased content of iron, manganese, ammonium, sulfate and chloride compounds in water extraction sites. The most common reason for the inconsistency of the mentioned indicators is the saturation of Latvian underground waters with iron compounds.
